A coffee maker is a kitchen implement or appliance used to
brew coffee. There are numerous methods for brewing coffee, some dating back
hundreds of years. Some of these coffee machines include coffee presses,
vacuum brewers, percolators and drip coffee makers. The percolator and drip
coffee maker are electric appliances while the coffee press requires
mechanical pressure and the vacuum brewer relies on vacuum action resulting
from heating water.
Most American homes employ a drip coffee maker. The first drip coffee maker
for home use was made by Mr. Coffee and became available in 1972, however
the first commercially available drip coffee maker was manufactured by Bunn
in 1963.
Specialized coffee makers for brewing espresso and steaming milk for coffee
drinks such as cappuccino and latte are also available for home use.
